Good leadership and management development in adult social care is about improving leadership skills to motivate, guide and inspire people to give high-quality care.

Training

The King’s Fund offers a range of professional development courses in leadership and organisational development, some of which are free of charge. See here for their courses.

The Institute of Health and Social Care Management provides health and social care personnel with accredited, practical leadership development and business support. Surrey Care Association members have access to these resources.
This is an SCA member benefit. If you are a member and would like to find out more, email us at [email protected].

Coaching and mentoring

Coaching involves using techniques to unlock a person’s potential. Strategies include questioning and deploying a strengths-based approach that looks at ‘what’s working well’ (appreciative inquiry). Through this process leaders are encouraged to identify changes that will have a positive impact on their professional and personal life.

Mentoring is different to coaching. A mentor will usually be a more experienced and knowledgeable professional who will encourage you to self-reflect and develop solutions-focused thinking. The aim of mentoring is to help you develop your own leadership expertise in a work context.
