Chancellor scraps cap on care costs

The Chancellor announced yesterday that the government would be scrapping the previously planned care cap under the adult social care charging reforms.

It estimates it will make £4 Billion in savings as a result. However, this does not address the issue of the cost of care, and the scrapping of the policy means that it is not directly addressed.

Winter Fuel Payments have also been changed with only older people receiving pension credit, eligible for the payments.

SCA Chair Maria Mills said: ‘We are disappointed that cap on care costs is being kicked into the long grass again.

As long as the foundations for paying for social care are not fair and robust, there will be many people who will not be able to be independent and thrive, and the NHS will be significantly impacted as a place of last resort.’
