Welfare Reform Bill passed

The government has won a vote on its Welfare Reform Bill by 75 votes with many concessions being made to the original bill.

This included reversing some cuts to universal credit and protecting current claimants of personal independence payment (Pip) from stricter eligibility rules. A further concession on not making any changes to Pip was made following MPs saying that this should not happen until a full review had taken place.

Vic Rayner, CEO of the National Care Forum said: ‘We welcome the significant changes made at the eleventh hour to many of the elements of the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment (PIP) Bill. They address some of the key concerns raised by our members on behalf of the people they support, including delaying any changes to PIP until after the PIP review being led by Sir Stephen Timms.’

Concessions were also made on government committing to employment support to find work. NCF commented that this must include support for employers to be able to create inclusive workplaces to aid disabled people to have access to work.
