Using Technology Responsibly in Social Care: A Message for Providers

For social care providers, technology can play an important role in improving quality, safety and responsiveness. Digital care records, assistive technology, video calls and monitoring tools can support more joined-up care, reduce delays and help staff respond more effectively to changing needs. But technology should never be introduced simply because it is available. Providers should be able to show how it improves outcomes for the people they support and how it fits with person-centred care.

Using technology responsibly means making good decisions about implementation, training and oversight. Providers need to ensure that any digital solution is accessible, inclusive and proportionate to the needs of the people using it. That includes thinking about consent, privacy, data protection and cyber security, as well as making sure staff have the confidence and skills to use systems properly. Technology should strengthen professional judgement and human connection, not replace them.

A proactive approach to care

Providers who use technology well are often able to deliver care that is more proactive, more coordinated and more responsive to individual needs. Used responsibly, technology can help services demonstrate good governance, support continuous improvement and enhance the experience of people who draw on care and support. The key is to see technology not as an end in itself, but as one of the tools that can help providers deliver safer, more effective and more compassionate care.

What does CQC look for?

The CQC actively seek out examples of best practice in technology when assessing social care providers.  This is not about a tick box exercise just to say it has been considered, but rather how the adoption of appropriate technology in a meaningful way enhances a person’s life.

Tailored support

Here in Surrey we are very fortunate to have a team dedicated to supporting social care providers navigate their way through data security and technological solutions.  They are available free of charge to support every social care provider in Surrey through data protection and cyber security health checks, tailored one to one support and regular webinars.  The team can be contacted on dspt@surreycare.org.uk and their service offer can be found here https://surreycare.org.uk/digital-support/. Please note that 30 June is the deadline for all care providers to publish their Data Security and Protection Toolkit, and our team can help support with any questions on this.

Until next time,

Nicola
